Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Controls Engineer to join our growing automation manufacturing team. This position will be responsible for designing, programming, testing, troubleshooting, and supporting control systems for custom automated machinery and manufacturing equipment.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on problem solver who is comfortable working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and collaborating with mechanical engineers, electricians, machine builders, and customers to take automation projects from concept through installation and startup.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, program, and troubleshoot industrial control systems for custom automation equipment.
- Develop and modify PLC and HMI programs for automated machinery.
- Program and integrate servo systems, VFDs, sensors, safety devices, robotics, and other automation components.
- Assist with electrical control panel design, schematics, and component selection.
- Perform machine testing, debugging, and system validation prior to shipment.
- Support machine startup, installation, and commissioning at customer facilities as needed.
- Diagnose electrical, programming, and controls-related issues and implement effective solutions.
- Work closely with mechanical engineering, electrical, machining, fabrication, and assembly teams throughout the project.
- Review customer specifications and ensure equipment meets project requirements.
- Maintain organized documentation, programs, backups, and revision records.
- Provide technical support to customers and internal team members.
- Assist with continuous improvement of machine controls, programming standards, and automation processes.
- Maintain a strong commitment to quality, safety, and meeting project deadlines.
Qualifications
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering,or a related field preferred. Equivalent hands-on industry experience will also be considered.
- Experience programming industrial PLCs and HMIs.
- Advanced knowledge and skill in programming with Rockwell Automation Software including ControlLogix/RSLogix 5000, SLC 500/RSLogix 500, EtherNet/IP Design and Configuration, RS View and PanelView and PanelBuilder 32.
- Knowledge of industrial electrical systems, controls, sensors, motors, VFDs, and servo systems.
- Ability to read and troubleshoot electrical schematics.
- Experience with industrial automation and custom machine building is strongly preferred.
- Robotics programming and integration experience is a plus.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to travel to customer locations for equipment installation, startup, troubleshooting, and service when required.
