About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Interior Designer to join our team supporting commercial furniture sales and space planning for clients across the DC, Maryland, and Virginia region. This hybrid position combines in-office/remote design work with on-site client visits for measurements, space planning, and installation support. The ideal candidate has prior experience working for a commercial furniture dealer and is comfortable managing multiple projects from concept through installation.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct on-site field measurements (V-measures) and site verifications at client locations throughout the DMV area
- Develop space plans, typicals, and furniture layouts using CET (Configura) and/or AutoCAD
- Create finish and specification packages for furniture systems, seating, and casegoods
- Collaborate with sales representatives to develop design concepts that meet client needs, budget, and timeline
- Prepare and manage furniture specifications, product renderings, and finish boards for client presentations
- Coordinate with manufacturers on product selection, lead times, and specification accuracy
- Review and QC orders prior to submission to ensure specification accuracy
- Support punch list walkthroughs and installation coordination as needed
- Maintain up-to-date product knowledge across key furniture manufacturer lines
- Attend client meetings, site visits, and occasional installation walkthroughs (local travel required)
Required Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience working for a commercial furniture dealer (required)
- Proficiency in CET (Configura) strongly preferred; experience with AutoCAD, 20-20, or similar space planning software also considered
- Familiarity with major contract furniture manufacturers (e.g., Steelcase, Herman Miller/MillerKnoll, Knoll, Haworth, HNI/Allsteel/HON, Kimball, Teknion, or similar)
- Strong understanding of furniture specification processes and order management
- Ability to accurately take field measurements and translate them into workable space plans
- Excellent communication and client-facing presentation skills
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for site visits within the DMV area
- Bachelor's degree in Interior Design, Architecture, or related field preferred (or equivalent industry experience)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with systems furniture typicals and workstation standards
- Knowledge of building codes, ADA guidelines, and general construction documents
- Prior experience coordinating with project managers and installation crews
- NCIDQ certification a plus, not required
