Structural Steel FCAW Welder AWS D1.1 FocusA day in the life
You clock in before sunrise, 5:00 AM sharp. By 5:15, your hood is down and your first Flux-Cored pass is running hot across heavy plate. You’ll move between fixtures, overhead cranes, and large weldments, reading WPSs and shop drawings to guide your work. Throughout the 10-hour shift, you’ll switch between FCAW as your primary process and GMAW/MIG, SAW, or SMAW as neededall to AWS D1.1 requirements. You’ll prep joints, grind, gouge, and clean, then inspect your work to confirm it meets strict structural standards for bridges and industrial projects.
Compensation & schedule
- Pay: $22–$34/hr (based on experience and certifications)
- Shift: 1st shift, 5:00 AM start, 10-hour shifts, Monday–Friday
What you’ll do
- Weld structural and bridge components using FCAW (primary), plus GMAW/MIG, SAW, and SMAW as required, following AWS D1.1
- Interpret weld symbols, Welding Procedure Specifications (WPSs), and detailed shop drawings
- Carry out joint prep, grinding, gouging, and post-weld cleanup
- Verify weld quality to meet specified codes, standards, and project requirements
- Safely operate around overhead cranes, fixtures, and heavy steel assemblies
What you’ll bring
- 2+ years of structural steel welding experience
- Flux Core (FCAW) proficiency required
- Experience with GMAW/MIG, SAW, and SMAW is a plus
- Current or prior AWS certifications preferredespecially D1.1/D1.5
- Background in an AISC-certified fabrication shop preferred
- Ability to read weld symbols, WPSs, and shop drawings accurately
- Skilled and safe when working with overhead cranes, fixtures, and large steel assemblies
