Position Overview
The Purchasing Agent is responsible for procuring materials, components, and services required to support manufacturing operations while managing cost, quality, and on-time delivery. This role partners with manufacturing, planning, and supply chain teams to maintain optimal inventory levels, negotiate with suppliers, and execute purchase orders using SAP. The Purchasing Agent helps drive continuous improvement in sourcing processes and supplier performance to ensure seamless production and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Source and evaluate suppliers to secure competitive pricing, quality, and delivery terms.
- Negotiate contracts, pricing, lead times, and payment terms with vendors.
- Create, issue, and manage purchase orders in SAP and track order status through delivery.
- Monitor supplier performance, conduct vendor scorecards, and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Collaborate with production planning, inventory control, and supply chain teams to forecast demand and maintain appropriate inventory levels.
- Expedite critical orders and resolve delivery or quality issues to minimize production disruptions.
- Perform cost analysis and identify opportunities for cost savings and process improvements.
- Maintain accurate procurement documentation and ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Resolve discrepancies with suppliers, including returns, claims, and invoice variances.
- Support periodic supplier audits, new product introductions, and cross-functional sourcing initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Logistics, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- 3+ years of purchasing or procurement experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
- Hands-on experience with SAP or a similar ERP system for creating and managing purchase orders.
- Strong understanding of supply chain principles, MRP processes, and inventory management.
- Proven negotiation skills and experience managing supplier relationships.
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel and comfortable working with data to support decision making.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and able to prioritize competing demands in a fast-paced environment.
- Certifications such as CPSM, CPIM, or equivalent are a plus.
