Job Description

The Construction Surveyor supports field layout, GPS surveying, and as-built verification activities on commercial construction and site development projects. This role works closely with the Lead Surveyor to perform layout for both earthwork and building construction, collect as-built shots, operate GPS rover equipment, and ensure survey accuracy throughout all phases of construction. The position requires strong experience in field surveying, construction staking, site development, and interpreting construction drawings, along with a willingness to travel to project sites and collaborate with project managers, superintendents, and field crews.

Responsibilities

• Perform field surveying and layout activities for sitework and vertical construction projects, including earthwork, utilities, foundations, and building structures.
• Complete construction staking for grading, foundations, utilities, and vertical construction layout to support civil and commercial building projects.
• Conduct GPS-based field layout using rover equipment and related surveying technology to ensure accurate positioning and measurements.
• Collect as-built shots and prepare as-built surveys to verify that constructed work matches design plans and specifications.
• Interpret and work from construction drawings, site plans, and engineering documents to guide layout and staking activities.
• Support topographic surveys and site development surveying, including measurement of existing conditions and proposed improvements.
• Collaborate closely with the Lead Surveyor, project managers, superintendents, and field crews to coordinate surveying activities with construction operations.
• Assist in layout for grading, earthwork, and site development, ensuring proper elevations, slopes, and alignments.
• Operate and maintain GPS rover equipment and related surveying tools, ensuring proper calibration and functionality.
• Travel regularly to active construction sites and adapt surveying methods to varying site conditions and project requirements.
• Work safely in outdoor environments, following site safety protocols while performing surveying tasks on active construction projects.
• Contribute to accurate documentation of survey data to support project records, quality control, and as-built verification.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience performing field surveying and layout activities for both sitework and vertical construction projects.
• Strong experience in construction staking, including grading layout, foundation layout, and utility layout.
• Hands-on experience operating GPS rover equipment for construction layout and surveying.
• Ability to conduct as-built surveys and collect accurate as-built shots for verification of completed work.
• Proficiency in interpreting construction drawings, site plans, and engineering documents.
• Knowledge of grading, foundations, utilities, and vertical construction layout practices.
• Experience supporting earthwork, site development, utility, or commercial building projects.
• Familiarity with topographic surveys and general land surveying principles.
• Comfort working outdoors in varying weather conditions and on active construction sites.
• Willingness and ability to travel regularly to project locations.
• Strong communication skills for collaborating with project managers, superintendents, and field crews.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working with engineering or consulting firms is highly preferred.
• Knowledge of Trimble, Topcon, or similar GPS systems used in construction surveying.
• AutoCAD Civil 3D experience is a plus for handling survey data and construction drawings.
• Exposure to a wide range of civil and commercial construction projects, including site development and building construction.
• Understanding of topography and topographic survey methods.

Work Environment

This position is primarily field-based and involves regular travel to active construction sites. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions while supporting earthwork, utility, site development, and building construction activities. You will operate GPS rover equipment and other surveying tools in dynamic construction environments, coordinating closely with on-site teams to complete layout and verification tasks.

This is a Permanent position based out of Fairmont, WV.

The pay range for this position is $48000.00 - $58000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
