Engineering and Public Works
JOB SUMMARY:
The Project Inspector provides construction inspection and field support for the Engineering and Public Works Department. This position ensures that public infrastructure projects are constructed in accordance with approved plans, specifications, permits, and applicable regulations. This is a full-time position. Interested candidates can apply on-line.A Civil Service Exam will be held on Friday, September 4th, 2026, at 10 AM. The exam location is the City Hall, 8 E. Washington St., Athens, OH 45701.
Given the nature of this classification's duties/responsibilities, it has been designated as Non-Exempt under the governing Fair Labor Standards Act regulations and, therefore, is entitled to formal overtime compensation and/or formal compensatory time.
JOB DUTIES:
• Provides construction inspection for street, bridge rehabilitation, water, sewer, water treatment, wastewater treatment, utility, and other public infrastructure projects to ensure contractor compliance with approved plans, specifications, permits, and applicable City, ODOT, OEPA and other regulatory requirements.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS and QUALIFICATIONS:
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Sufficient visual acuity to detect faults (poor construction, improper materials, etc.), at times in poorly lit areas.
Sufficient dexterity and mobility to perform all required inspection tasks on structures of varying design and height at varying construction stages, including stages when sidewalks, ramps, and stairs have not been installed.
Ability to endure a variety of climatic and temperature conditions, sometimes in active construction sites and hazardous areas and conditions, often in areas of moving traffic.
Ability to lift occasionally up to 50 lbs. for operational equipment and materials.
Ability to use computer terminals for sustained input and processing.
