Traffic Control Branch Manager

Location:Charlotte, NC Metro

Reports To:Regional Director

Position Overview

The Branch Manager oversees all operational and safety activities for our Charlotte branch. You will manage everyday logistics, build local client relationships with civil contractors, and lead field crews to maintain temporary work zones. A primary focus is enforcing strict compliance with NCDOT standards and federal MUTCD regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operations & Logistics:Direct daily dispatch, equipment inventory, and scheduling for multiple work zones in the Charlotte area.
  • Safety & Compliance:Oversee strict implementation of Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) and conduct site audits.
  • Business Growth:Maintain relationships with municipal leaders, utility partners, and regional highway contractors.
  • Financial Management:Manage the branch budget, optimize profit margins, and deliver detailed operations reports.
  • Team Leadership:Recruit, train, and manage supervisors, field installers, and flaggers.

State of North Carolina Regulatory Qualifications

To legally manage or supervise temporary traffic installations on North Carolina roads, state mandates require specific background credentials and safety certifications.

1. Mandated Work Zone Certifications

  • NCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Supervisor Certification:You must possess an active certification from an approved provider like theAmerican Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA)orCarolinas AGC.
  • Experience Prerequisite:Becoming a certified supervisor requires a passing exam grade and a minimum of2 years of verified on-the-job work zone experience(such as setting up lane closures or inspecting sites).
  • Validity:The certification is strictly valid forfour yearsand requires completing an NCDOT-approved recertification course to remain compliant.
  • Crew Requirements:Branch leadership must guarantee that at least one certified Work Zone Installer or Supervisor is physically present on every active field crew.

2. Licensing and Background Standards

  • Driver License:A valid standard driver license with a clean record is required. AClass A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL)is highly preferred for managing branches handling heavy truck and attenuator fleets.[1,2]
  • Drug & Alcohol Screening:The state enforces strict FMCSA compliance, including mandatory pre-employment drug screening and background reviews of past safety performance.

3. Experience and Educational Preferences

  • Education:A Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • Alternative Pathway:A high school diploma paired with 5 to 6 years of direct highway work zone experience is commonly accepted under state equivalency standards.
