Position Overview

Tews Company is seeking aSenior Mechanical Design Engineerwith a strong background incommercial product design, particularly for environments whereform, usability, and visual appeal are as critical as function.

This role is ideal for an engineer who can bridgemechanical engineering and industrial design principles, creating products that not only perform reliably but also meet the expectations ofend users in clinical or professional settings.

The right candidate will have experience designingcustomer-facing hardware productsnot just internally housed systemsand will bring a refined understanding ofmodern product aesthetics, ergonomics, and usability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadend-to-end mechanical designof new products and design enhancements
  • Developenclosures and assembliesfor electronic and electromechanical systems
  • Translate complex technical requirements intointuitive, user-friendly product designs
  • Ensure products balancefunctionality, manufacturability, and visual appeal
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams
  • DriveNew Product Introduction (NPI)from concept through production
  • Manage and executeEngineering Change Notices (ECNs)and configuration management activities
  • Assess design changes for impact onproduct performance, safety, and compliance
  • Support supplier development and ensure manufacturable, scalable designs
  • Contribute to continuous improvement ofdesign and change management processes

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field
    (or 5–10 years of relevant experience in lieu of degree)
  • 5–10+ years of experience inmechanical design engineering, with a strong emphasis oncommercial product development

Technical Expertise:

  • Proven experience designingproducts used by end users(e.g., commercial, healthcare, or consumer-facing equipment)
  • Strong understanding ofproduct form, ergonomics, and visual design considerations
  • Experience with:
    • Electrical/electronic enclosure design
    • Plastic injection molded components
    • Metal castings and machining processes
    • Gear trains, bearings, and motion systems
    • Thermal analysis of electronic assemblies
  • Proficiency inCAD tools and PLM systems
  • Working knowledge ofERP systems and Microsoft Office tools

Regulatory & Quality Systems:

  • Experience working withinregulated quality systems(e.g., ISO 13485, ISO 9000, or similar)
  • Familiarity withdesign controls, risk management, and change impact assessment
  • Understanding ofproduct risk frameworks(e.g., ISO 14971 or equivalent)

Preferred Background

  • Experience designing products that integrateelectronics, sensors, or signal-based technologies(e.g., RF, IoT, embedded systems)
  • Exposure tobiometric or sensor-based systems(e.g., ECG, CO2, SpO2, heart rate monitoring)
  • Background in industries whereprecision, reliability, and user interaction intersect
  • Military or aerospace experience is acceptableonly if complemented by commercial product design experience

Candidates who have primarily worked onenclosed or non-user-facing hardware (e.g., aerospace or defense systems)without exposure to product aesthetics and usability will not be the right fit.
