Main Function

  • Supervises and directs all activities related to the laboratory according to the policies, procedures,
  • philosophy and objective of TOPS Surgical Specialty Hospital. Includes responsibility
  • of laboratory staff, material and equipment and education of personnel. May delegate responsibilities and
  • duties to personnel, both professional and non-professional. Analyzes and evaluates laboratory services
  • to improve quality of care rendered. Is accountable for all aspects of the laboratory department.


  • Participates as a team member in support of the total peri-operative/post-surgical process
  • Organizes time, equipment, supplies, and personnel to provide effective and efficient case management
  • Supervises and directs patient care in the laboratory
  • Organizes laboratory activities efficiently and effectively
  • Delegates activities appropriate to the abilities of available staff members
  • Considers cost containment by using supplies economically
  • Assists with supply and equipment inventories to maintain stock level and availability
  • Reviews patients’ medical records/needs to plan care with other healthcare team members
  • Provides comfort and reassurance to patient
  • Maintains patients’ privacy and dignity
  • Monitors compliance with principles of aseptic technique according to accepted standards
  • Responds in a timely manner to meet the needs of the patient and physician
  • Documents patient care records and other forms accurately following policies and procedures
  • Supervises and directs all care provided to patients in the laboratory department in accordance with hospital policy
  • Provides a safe environment for patients and personnel
  • Makes assignments for patient care in accordance with the needs of patients and the individual skills of the staff
  • Provides and controls material supplies and equipment required for successful operation of the laboratory department
  • Provides education and technical opportunities for all staff members
  • Plans, controls, directs and coordinates all administrative duties to ensure proper functioning of unit and personnel

  • Performs other tasks and duties as assigned in an efficient, effective, and cost conscious manner, complying with all USPI’s policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Is responsible for all aspects of the Joint Commission lab accreditation process.



Required Skills


  • College requirements met in Medical Technology program from a school approved by ASCP or AMT.
  • Current BCLS.
  • Current certificate showing passage of National Registry from ASCP, NCA or AMT.
  • Able to flex hours and work days to meet needs related to unanticipated acuity, volume changes and/or problems
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
