The purpose of this position is to protect the public health and safety of the citizens of Sugar Land through the enforcement of City ordinances regarding animals and to act as the city's local rabies control authority.


This position provides humane care and treatment to lost and stray animals in the care of Animal Services.


  • Provide premier customer service to internal and external customers by responding to calls of service in a timely and professional manner.
  • Operates City animal services vehicles safely and obeys state laws and City policies during the performance of duties.
  • Utilize computer aided dispatch system and be able to enter data into system using Chameleon Software
  • Picking up and transporting stray and/or injured animals, livestock and/or wildlife
  • Enforces animal service laws and ordinances by patrolling the City for animal violations and responding to calls.
  • Issues citations accordingly and appears and testifies in court proceedings as required
  • Educates citizens regarding compliance with animal laws, ordinances and quarantine requirements.

Formal Education:

  • High school education or GED.

Relatable Work Experience:

  • One year in care and handling of animals or other animal related experience.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment and maintain DSHS Animal Control Basic Certification
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision and follow written and verbal instruction.
  • Data entry skills required

Training (License and/or Certification):

  • DSHS Animal Control Basic Certification or National Animal Control Officer Certification is preferred.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License.
