JOB DESCRIPTION:

Performs [routine] work activities related to the installation, repair, troubleshooting and maintenance and [programming] of traffic systems, communication, illumination and data collection devices/systems. Work may be performed in heavy traffic and may require extensive statewide travel. Work may require contact with governmental and private entities. [Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details].

 
The essential duties for this job include:

  • Assists in designing and reviewing traffic signal, traffic data collection and illumination design projects.
  • Assists in responding to complaints and identifying problems regarding traffic signal timing/traffic congestion and assists in developing recommendations for long-term solutions.
  • Assists in the electronics repair lab.
  • Assists in the fabrication of traffic control and data collection devices that are not available from the industry.
  • Assists in working with other governmental and private entities concerning utilities and rights-of-way.
  • Attends meetings with Area Engineers and contractors to resolve problems and implement solutions.
  • Follows applicable safety procedures when working in an area where other utilities such as high voltage lines, gas lines, water and sewage lines and heavy traffic are located.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots and problem solves possible new site characteristics.
  • Installs, maintains and replaces TV cameras, motorized LED and fiber optic signs and cables; monitors communication devices/systems; as required moves related equipment/items.
  • Installs, maintains, modifies, adjusts, tests, troubleshoots, inspects and repairs electronic traffic control, communication, traffic data collection and illumination systems.
  • Operates, maintains and services equipment such as bucket trucks, drilling and pole setting rigs, concrete saws, trenching machines, cable locating instruments.  This position requires the ability to drive/travel.
  • Responds to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting or traffic data collection equipment.
  • Maintains stock and equipment to ensure necessary tools, equipment, products and materials are available for scheduled projects. The position requires the ability to move up to 100 pounds.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:

The required competencies for this job include:

 

  • Communicate effectively
  • Work in cramped spaces (bend, stoop, crawl) and at varied heights
  • Work with electricity up to 600 volts
  • Occasionally move up to 100 pounds (See essential duties for examples of items to be moved.)
  • Follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures
  • The relationship of traffic control equipment to the operation of a traffic management system
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Electronic circuit boards, microprocessors and chips
  • Digital data communications and closed circuit television systems
  • The use, maintenance and repair of tools and equipment of the trade
  • The use of personal computers and applicable programs, applications and systems
  • The use of applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade
  • The use of applicable electronic test equipment
  • Maintaining a safe working environment

 

Education
This job requires the following:

High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies


Work Experience
This job requires the following:

  • 3 years in Construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical, traffic mgmt, transportation engineering, design, traffic systems maintenance
    (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)
  • No supervisory experience required.
  • Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on year per year basis.


Licenses and Certifications
The following Licenses and/or Certifications are required for this job:

  • Must obtain a Class B or Higher CDL (Commercial Driver's License) within 60 days of hire date.
  • Safety Impact Certificate
  • Commercial Driver Certificate

This is a Safety Impact position (either Safety Impact, Commercial Driver and/or Vessel Crew Member) and will be subject to random drug testing.
