JOB DESCRIPTION:

Position Summary:

To ensure the efficient and cost-effective operation of the Salvage workforce and location through security of corporate assets, customer relations, sale of donated goods, inventory controls and accurate transactions, in order to maximize profitability and increase training opportunities. Also, provides direction, job training, and support of Salvage team members concerning the proper and safe handling of goods, leading to increased revenues for mission services funding. The Salvage Assistant Manager assists the Salvage Manager with providing direction, job training, supervision, and support for Salvage team members concerning the proper handling of goods, leading to increased revenues for mission services funding.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates Goodwill Houston’s Core Values in all actions.
  • Ensures adherence to Guiding Principles and CARF standards.
  • Ensures alignment and consistency of all aspects of Salvage operations to include SOPs,
  • Reference Guides, job descriptions, performance evaluations, observation checklists, production standards, GoodwillU training, Safety Program, and others documents related to DGR systems.
  • Assist with the management, and coordination of after-market resale Salvage operation and ensures appropriate operational systems and human resources are in place to generate maximum profitability.
  • Supports the hiring, training, supervises, and evaluates team members within the framework of Goodwill policies and procedures and job descriptions.
  • Develops, trains, leads by example and supervises operations leadership, ensuring they are able to achieve the goals set forth by GWH.
  • Operates the warehouse and Salvage team within budgeted expense to revenue ratios.
  • Ensures that the promotion, collection, transportation, production, sales and external/internal distribution of donated products, related operational and sales activities are properly integrated to achieve maximum profitability and quality customer service.
  • Assist the logistics with vendors for the sale, recycling and disposal of salvage goods (apparel, shoes, books, etc.); recyclable materials (cardboard, metals, glass, cellular phones, computers, etc.); trash; and hazardous materials; maximizing post-retail revenue opportunities and minimizing disposal costs.
  • Coordinate and transact salvage sales and zero waste opportunities toward increased revenue and profitability, and to reduce waste and further GWH green environment initiatives.
  • Ensures hazardous materials are handled in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations and GWH policies and procedures.
  • Ensures good stewardship of all donations, through proper handling and processing of incoming donation flow in and out of the stores and warehouse in accordance with GHW policies and procedures.
  • Makes certain all transportation/baler (Fork Lift and operation of heavy machinery and vehicles) safety policies, regulations, and practices are followed to ensure accident-free driving and processing and minimized insurance costs.
  • Ensures safety and image of truck yard, parking areas, loading dock, salvage areas are clean, neat and safe at all times.
  • Schedules/maintains labor and payroll in accordance with GWH policies and procedures.
  • Supervises the daily activities of salvage team members to maintain consistent processing of all salvage materials meeting production and safety standards.
  • Coordinates loads and maintain accurate inventory control of goods.
  • Inspects facility and Salvage equipment to ensure good company image and safe working environment supported by the Human Resources department.
  • Ensures all trucks and trailers containing salvage goods are manifested and sealed upon receipt.
  • Instructs Team Members in the offload and on-load methods and all other procedures to instill a service-conscious attitude and minimize service failures and injuries. Trains, develops and motivates workforce.
  • Ensures that loading and unloading of vehicles is performed utilizing sound safety practices (i.e. lifting, use of equipment, etc.) and accidents are reported in a timely manner to the immediate supervisor.
  • Report incidents, vehicle defects, traffic violations, or damage to vehicles before and after route in a timely manner. Including equipment repairs and/or maintenance to the Manager in a timely manner.
  • Work varied hours, which include evenings and weekends, are required.
  • Assists with the Salvage Manager on the following critical duties:
  • Safety Site Inspection
  • Incident/Accident reports
  • Communicating to supervisor purchase and supply order needs
  • Team Meeting Minutes
  • Provide information needed for WESA Reports is completed in an accurate and timely manner
  • Communicating to supervisor work requests (Facility Maintenance and Information Support)
  • Responsible for image, maintenance, loss prevention, safety, and security of the warehouse in accordance with GWH policies and procedures.
  • Performs assigned duties within the framework of our Guiding Principles and Core Values.
  • Attends in-service and related training as assigned by Operations Leadership.
  • May be required to participate of activities outside of Goodwill Industries of Houston.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience in warehouse setting preferred.
  • Previous Supervisor experience preferred.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Must be able to read, write, communicate effectively and perform basic mathematical skills.

     

  • Must be able to become fork lift certified, or prior experience operating a forklift.

     

  • Effectively lead a team toward achievement of organizational objectives, and coach team members toward self-actualization.

     

  • Effectively use computer applications, including electronic mail, word processing, spreadsheets, GPS, Internet/Intranet, and other applications as determined appropriate by GWH.

     

  • Ability to work under general supervision and/or independently.

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.

 

Physical Requirements/Work Environment:

  • Ability to twist, bend, squat, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, push and pull.

  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.

  • Specific vision abilities including close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Work environment includes exposure to outdoor temperatures and moderate noise levels.

 

Training and Experience:

  • Certified Forklift operator.
  • Six months of experience as a Supervisor, or equivalent work experience required.
  • Proficiency in Salvage tracking & reporting.
  • Safety certifications preferred
  • Knowledgeable in all loading techniques for all salvage load types.
